This new section of the website is being developed as we do not currently have a club newsletter, so members can write stories or reports from club meets and events, or submit useful articles that other members of the club may be interested in. It's a little rough and ready at the mo but will take shape over the coming months! Many Thanks to those who have already submitted content for this page!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- North Leicester MC Rope Skills Master Class (written and submitted by Emily Davies) A sunny Leicestershire day provided a pleasant setting for the rope master class held in Hill Hole Quarry, Markfield on the 2nd July. Those attending were treated to some very slick rope skills from Steve Ratcliffe, who took the top roping section. Following some talk about how not to do things, we ascended the cliff to demonstrate what we already knew. Thankfully all were deemed competent, and only minor adjustments selected to ease the strain on the gear. We were then instructed on the differences between climbing as a competent pair to taking a group of novice climbers out. The differences between co-operation and supervision were discussed with the first lesson being always keep yourself safe. Steve then demonstrated how to set up 3 independent top ropes in less time than we had taken to do one. A discussion followed on which items the club should invest in and maintain, and soon we will have some lovely new static ropes, heavy-duty screw gates and large slings for group work. Those who had not done much climbing before were with Brian learning some of the finer points of belaying and gear placement, and everyone came away feeling the afternoon had been productively spent. There was just time for a quick drink at the Queens Head to round of a fine afternoon. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anglesey Comes but Once a Year... (written and submitted by Amy Thorpe) The North Leicestershire Mountain Club hosted another successful annual Anglesey meet at Tyn Rhos Campsite, Trearddur Bay over the Bank Holiday weekend (27th – 29th May); the event is now well into its 3rd decade and is still a favourite for families and hardened climbers alike. However, this year it was Anglesey with a difference – not only did the sunshine for the majority of the time, with only the odd shower overnight, but it also played host to our belated Christmas Party – Ho, Ho, Ho..! Saturday proved to be a glorious, if not a little breezy, day on the island and many people arrived from various parts of the country – some even travelling from Devon to join the festivities! In total 48 members, children and WAGs convened to partake in some leisurely climbs, walks or trips to the beach (or pub!) as the mood took them. Some of the more fervent members visited Holyhead Mountain and scaled the heights of ‘Pigeon Hole Crack’ (S4A) and ‘The Wandering Primrose’ (S4A) before squeezing in ‘New Boots and Panties’ (S4A) as the last route of the afternoon; thankfully nobody dare ask if the route actually lived up to its name! Plenty of ale flowed in the evening alongside plenty of jest over the case of the missing keys...Oops! Christmas day arrived on Sunday and Brian and Jacqui dedicated their whole day to the evening’s preparations – BBQ for 48 is no mean feat! The sunshine afforded another trip to Holyhead Mountain and, what has commonly become known as, ‘The Slab’ giving the little’uns a chance to practise their technique, and putting a few of the old’uns to shame! Meanwhile, Ian, Paul, Mark and Leanne tackled ‘Thread’ (S4A), ‘Mrs Murdock’ (S4A) and ‘Rhiannon’ (HS4A) whilst others headed along the Coastal Path in the direction of ‘The White Eagle’ for some afternoon refreshments! Christmas dinner was soon upon us and, with the marquee erected and club barbie fired up, the festivities began in earnest. Much merriment was had around the Christmas tree and pass the parcel provided much hilarity; as ever, a good evening was enjoyed by all! The bank holiday weekend offered the opportunity for many to extend their stay with some members staying until mid-week recovering from the weekend’s festivities and contemplating the theme for 2012 – Glamping! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Out for the Afternoon (written and submitted by Amy Thorpe) Ian, Paul and Alison took to the Peak district for an afternoon at Wildcat, Matlock, on Friday 3rd June, with me tagging along in the hope of topping up the tan and taking some photos. In the scorching sun they made the multi-pitch ascent of Jackdaw Grooves on Coyote Buttress (VS 4b, 4b) and Lynx on High Crag (HS 4b, 4a - 2*), chalking up Mark’s first outing on Limestone. As the afternoon rolled into early evening all climbers agreed that Lynx was a much more enjoyable route, and the day passed without incident - apart from the rescue of a rogue rucksack! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
