The North Leicestershire Mountain Club is affiliated to the British Mountaineering Council, the Derbyshire Caving Association and the Ramblers Association is based in Northern Leicestershire but also has many members from all over England and Wales.
We have been established over thirty years, and although relatively small at present, our membership is currently very active. We have members of all ages who's skills are vast and varied; ranging from highly experienced climbers, cavers and mountaineers, to ramblers and tea shop guides who know all the finest venues in the land!
We meet three times a week for most of the year; on Monday Night for a walk around Charnwood Forest, on Tuesday Night for climbing (either at the Leicester Tower Climbing Centre or at one of Leicestershire's many crags - weather permitting), and again for a pint or two in Quorn at the White Hart Pub on a Thursday Night.
We also have a programme of Meets & Events throughout the year organised by our Meets & Events Coordinator. These are usually weekends away around the UK to walk, climb or go caving. We all enjoy camping but from time to time we will hire hut's from other clubs or stop in Youth Hostels. We also try to organise some meets further afield, such as this years excursion to Morocco where eight members climbed Mt Toubkal, the highest summit in North Africa. Next year we are planning a trip to the Dolomites in Italy for a couple of weeks of via ferrata, sport climbing and walking, with the possibility of climbing another 4000m summit, the Gran Paradiso.
Members benefit from affiliated membership to the BMC, which is now on an individual basis - meaning that you will receive the BMC quarterly summit magazine and have the right to vote a BMC meetings on issues that may interest you. Your affiliated BMC membership gives you third party liability insurance cover whilst partaking in your mountaineering activities - not just during club activities, but at all other times also.
Members also benefit from discounts at a number of outdoor equipment retailers, we are currently working on a list of preferred suppliers with specific agreements, but in general terms, mentioning in most outdoor sports stores that your club is affiliated to the BMC, Derbyshire Caving or Ramblers Associations will usually attract 10% discount.
As a full member of NLMC you will receive first refusal on any space limited club trips and events and regular updates by email, mail or phone about our upcoming activities.
Joining NLMC We welcome anyone interested in joining the club to come along to any of our meets, events, or nights out during the week either with a view to joining or just to see what we get up and weather or not our club is for you.
If you are interested in getting involved - simply contact our Meets and Events Coordinator (details on the Contacts page) who will give you all the information you need and make arrangements for you to meet some of our members and hopefully join us on our meet. We understand that it can be awkward and intimidating to have to turn up in a pub and try and find a group of people you don't know, so we try to make as easy and friendly experience as possible.
Once you have decided that you would like to join, you can download an application form (coming soon) from this page. All you need to do is return it with the relevant subscription fee's to our Club Membership Secretary who will enter your details onto our members list and you will receive a membership card and login details for the members only section of the website.
NLMC Junior Membership - (Draft Policy!) Many of us began walking and climbing when we were children, this may have been with friends and family, but for a lot of us who's parents didn't share the same interests, walking and climbing with a club provided many opportunities that we wouldn't otherwise have had. Although we recognise the concerns that many other clubs have with accepting young members under the age of 18, we also feel very strongly that our young people should have every opportunity to get involved with our activities and to learn and progress into experienced mountaineers if they wish.
With this in mind we welcome young people to join the NLMC as Junior Members. Children aged 15 and under may join the club only if one or other of their parents is also a full member, and providing that that parent is prepared to take full responsibility for, and supervise their child at all times whilst attending any club meet or event. Young people aged 16 - 17 may join the club independently, but parental consent will be required at the time of joining, and a parent/guardian will need to appoint a full member of the club to act as a responsible parent in "loco parentis" for that young member during their participation in club activities.
The BMC (British Mountaineering Council) is the representative body that exists to protect the freedoms and promote the interests of climbers, hill walkers and mountaineers, including ski-mountaineers. The BMC recognises that climbing, hill walking and mountaineering are activities with a danger of personal injury or death. Participants in these activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions.
